As technology advances, even as technology exists now, it's completely possible for one microcontroler to control two her different processors, so it isn't beyond reason for two modules to take up the same physical space as one current module. They could click in besides eachother, sharing the same bus, and power supply. The only difference between the modules now and in the future is the design of the bus.
