Well if you think about, you can always control the volume. People can set it to low and have the watch next to your ear.
SPEAKER MODULE

I can understand a headphone jack module (possibly incorporated with another module like a button or Infra red), but a speaker makes little sense because it would be quite soft in volume unless you use a large amplifier, which would drain battery faster.
A soft volume wont help by holding the watch to your ear unless you are using it with a sim module as a phone... perhaps incorporating the speaker into a sim module makes more sense.

@Haratu
You don't need a sim module to work with the speaker. The watch will be connected to phone like a Bluetooth headset. Unless you don't want to have your phone around, then you will need the sim module.

The speaker is not just to talk to. It's also to get tones instead of just vibrations for notifications...

I'm gonna get the SIM module and get some wireless earphones or maybe the batband. I don't really think a speaker is important, I had one on my Gear 2 but I didn't really use it except for music with my friends.
Perfect time too because the batband is also shipping in May

We need speaker or i spaeker. Not so much for playing music but for sound notifications etc.
Also at the momment the only smart watch with speaker is the apple watch and a spaeker module is what needs to compete with all the adroid snart watches, not even the gear s2 has one.
Lg urabane 2 has one but for now it has been discontinued due to some soft ware issues and i heard its loud.
I want the choice to buy a loud speaker module simply beacuse most times my phone is on silent and i some times hardly feel the vibrations on my moto 360 so to have vibration and cool notification sounds would come.in pretty hand and also when making calls from the watch i dont need a blue tooth.
And hey if my phone runs out of battery and i want to listen to music i just simply use my blocks to play music with the speaker module.

I wouldn't suggest a speaker module for the music. A module is quite small and a small speaker can't give the sound quality you'd expect from regular speakers.
On the other side you also would need to have the music on your watch storage. Assuming you use it when you phone ran out of batteries. There isn't very much storage in the watch too, so I suggest using that storage for apps.
Although you can use it for streaming with the SIM module when your phone is out of batteries, so that might be an option for you. In the future a flash memory module might also be good for you.
So I think the speaker module isn't necessary yet. But it might go well with the SIM and the flash memory module.
When you ran into a problem, don't give up.
Most of the time a nice workaround will help you further.

I can see one being useful for notification tones, but not necessary, there are a lot of other modules I think I would buy before a speaker module

Guess the batband is shipping 4 months earlier than BLOCKS.

I completely agree with you Casualt. I do see the need for a speaker to be added to the core. Below you will find the request I sent to the BLOCKS founders where I make my arguments for adding a speaker to the core. Be reading some of the comments in the forum, I can see there are several members that don't see the need for a speaker in the core, but I would argue that there are just as many people (if not more) who are not currently participating in the forum discussions that do see a need for a speaker in the core. Given that the release of the BLOCKS watch has now been moved to September the BLOCKS Team still has plenty of time to to incorporate the speaker in the watch, while at the same time figure out a way to obtain the IP68 certification. Heck, if Samsung can do it with their Galaxy S7 phone, why can't BLOCKS, right?
- Hi Serge & Alireza,
Thank you very much first of all for taking time out of your hectic work schedule to send me a personal note recognizing my support for the BLOCKS campaign. I do believe you have a fantastic product on your hands and I have no doubt that your company will be very successful in the years to come.
For the record, I want to state that the modular approach to smartwatch development is genius and it is the only sure way to stay up to speed with technology. With that said, I do want to express one major concern that I have as a backer (and I say this with the utmost respect to you and your team, and because I want you to succeed):
I think BLOCKS is missing a critical opportunity by deciding not to include a speaker in the core. I say that because now we will have to think about adding a separate speaker module to the band, thus taking very limited space away from another module that can add additional functionality to the watch. And yes, I know that some people will respond by saying that this is the whole purpose of having a modular system, that you can swap out all of these capabilities. But what if you want access to 4 different functions at the same time and one of the modules is taken up by the speaker? The speaker should be in the core and not in the module. It needs to be a standard feature of the watch.
I do get that there are design considerations that go into make decisions around what is included and what is not. And perhaps you would be right in stating that by adding a speaker in the core it would alter the slim design of the watch, but I would honestly be willing to sacrifice a little thickness if it meant that a speaker could be included.
It is true that when you are in a public space some people may not want other people to overhear their personal conversations in which case they could switch to a a blue tooth headset. However, I still want to have the ability to choose whether I want to hear the conversation via speaker (using the SIM GSM functionality) or via the Blue Tooth headset - if you don't include a speaker in the core I won't have that choice at all . My only recourse would be to buy a speaker module, but the problem with that is I will still lament the fact that a speaker module is taking up the space of another module I could be using. That and the fact that I still envision scenarios where I would have the necessary privacy to have a conversation in the open (i.e. while driving in my car; working at home on a project; cooking in the kitchen - all activities where both hands are occupied) or even if I just want to listen to my voice memos. I may not want to text messages all the time especially since the screen on a watch is so small. Voice memos come quite in handy. But what do I do if I want to listen to a voice memo and I don't have my BT headset with me? Besides, a BT headset is yet another accessory I will have to carry with me everywhere you go. What I really need is a true stand alone communication device I can depend on.
Here is another consideration: The problem with the speaker being placed in the module is that it is the one module that can actually be affected by a lack of space. If you make it too small it affects the resonance. If you put it in the core later (for a future upgrade) consumers will need to purchase both a new shell (one that comes with a hole for the speaker) and also replace the entire internal core (where all of the internal components are housed) and replace it with a new internal combo that includes the speaker component. So, although it's doable, it just adds to the cost later on to the consumer (this goes against the concept of being the only watch you will ever need, do you agree? I am referring to the core).
Again, please don't get me wrong, I love this product and I am supporting it through and through. I believe in what BLOCKS is doing here. It's a fantastic product, but please, please consider adding the speaker to the core - you still have time to do it. There are a lot of backers that are asking about the SIM GSM functionality and believe me, they will be looking to have this feature in the core. As more people buy additional modules, the last thing they need is having a speaker module taking up the limited space in the band. Please consider it!
Thank you for hearing me out and considering my request.
Sincerely,
Carlos Aragon
