The current NFC module is a passive one, which is why I, for one, won't get it. It is basically just an RFID tag, like the one you would find on a contactless credit card or transit card. You'll need to re-write it every time you want to change the data stored in it, and you'll need a reader to do that. The team hasn't disclosed any new info on this module yet, but paying with it will likely be impossible without some kind of agreement between BLOCKS itself and banking institutions. It would be like cloning your credit card on a blank one, something which is (legally) impossible. They are looking forward to make an active NFC module too in the future, and such a module should be compatible with Android Pay. As a matter of fact, an active NFC module is the one I'm mostly looking forward to develop in the near future, together with a combo environmental one. But this is a discussion for the Developers sub-forum!

Thanks for the explanation!

Given that the NFC module is not usable for payments it seems all but useless for me, so that kind of restricts my module choice to any 4 from 4. Unless I can persuaded of the benefits of a passive NFC

As a matter of fact, I've more than once criticize the poor description of the current NFC module real capabilities and functions in the comments section of their KS project. Up until now, it's still unknown what the module will be able to do. I hope they will focus on something more than a passive tag, particularly with the four extra months of development announced in their latest update.

They have to team up with Google to implement Android Pay or another service. Otherwise, the NFC module would be pretty useless, and just a pain to use.

NFC is a rather cool feature but not that useful for now.
If BLOCKS teams up with payments apps or (as seen during the campaign) train network it would be awesome but if not the NFC just becomes a fancy way to transfer files.

Not even that. To transfer files you would need an active NFC module. The passive one could only be used as a business card or something like that. You might copy your transit card in it but 1) the module would still be limited to one card only and 2) they would need to find an agreement with each transit company to make that feasible.

Is it only a passive NFC module ?
I find weird that the BLOCKS team decided to have only passive capabilities.
Could it be a place problem ?
